Mid Century Modern Style is an American Movement that started in the mid of 20th
century as a reflection of the International and Bauhaus movement. The function was as important as form in Mid-century designs.
This style characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature.
Although the style has many variations throughout the world, it has a few underlying
characteristics:
1. The style is timeless as it emphasizes clean lines, shapes and simplicity.
2. The style focuses on functionality and form.
3. The honest use of materials makes the style easy to adapt to all kinds of
spaces.
Colour Palette
This style has a bold colour palette. These colours are balanced by other neutral colours and
earthy colours like oranges, greens, in the space. A bold accent wall gives shape to the style. Hints of vibrant colour are also seen in the furniture to give a pop of excitement to space.
Materials
The use of the material in its honest form is used to enrich the space. The natural grains
and textures of materials like wood, leather, textured fabrics speak to this style the most.
Other inexpensive manmade materials like plastic, plywood, glass, and/or Lucite are
integrated with natural materials to give a modern touch to the vibe of the space.
Furniture
To choose mid-century modern furniture, look for clean lines and tapered legs. A central
iconic furniture shall help enhance the other elements in the space. Materials such as
wood (usually teakwood), Bamboo, Metal, etc. are preferred for their durability and
strength. The hefty ornate furniture pieces should be avoided.
Accessories
The style adapts very well to contemporary accessories. Accessories made of Brass or
rose gold add richness to space. Mirrors and other pieces made of natural materials
like jute braided rugs, minimalistic paintings, etc. balance the space very well.
Patterns
Geometric patterns and black & white accents help give a modernized look to space. Simple patterns and muted colours that echo the clean lines of the style
make the space feel light and airy.
